Eyelid Surgery
Enhancing Vision and Comfort with Precision Care
At Wooster Eye Center, we understand that your eyes are essential. Over time, the delicate skin around your eyes can lose elasticity and start to cause sagging skin over the upper eyelids. These droopy lids can affect both the appearance and comfort of your eyes as well as your visual field. Eyelid surgery, such as blepharoplasty or ptosis repair, is a highly effective procedure that can correct these issues and help you feel and see your best.
What is Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, allowing your eyes to open more easily so that your peripheral vision improves. Removing excess skin from the upper eyelids also reduces the need to use your forehead muscles to open your eyes more widely. Ptosis surgery is similar to blepharoplasty but more complex as it involves re-attachment of weak eyelid muscles to the edge of the eyelid. Both procedures are performed under conscious sedation on an out-patient basis.
Recovery and Results
Recovery from eyelid surgery can take weeks to months. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are normal for the first few weeks after surgery. Most patients will have activity restrictions for at least a week. Artificial tears may be needed for dry eyes until lid closure improves. Complete healing of the incisions can take several months.
Are You a Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
You might be a good candidate for blepharoplasty or ptosis repair if you are in good general health and have realistic expectations about the procedure’s outcome. Ideal candidates are individuals who:
- Experience droopy or sagging upper eyelids
- Experience forehead fatigue due to trying to open their eyes through the day
- Experience reduced peripheral vision, especially upper vision and side vision
- Experience recurrent dermatitis in the crease of the upper lids
Will Insurance Cover Eyelid Surgery?
While eyelid surgery can always be done on an out-of-pocket, cosmetic basis, medical insurance will cover eyelid surgery if the procedure is deemed medically necessary. Most insurance companies make that determination based on patient complaints, photographs, and results of peripheral vision tests. Our office will acquire and submit this information to your insurance company for their review prior to any surgery.
